Cut Flower Anemone Mistral Panda Seedling Pack

Sale price$35.00

Anemone coronaria

Cut Flower Anemone seedlings, grown in Marlborough by Gray Floral, shipping NZ wide.

Anemones are one of the sure signs of Spring in the cutting garden, starting just as the tulips begin to slow. They flower prolifically if you can keep on top of harvesting/deadheading and the stems often lengthen with the season. They resent warm temps, so will do their best flowering in late winter until mid spring, but depending on your region you may find this varies.

Cut Flower anemones are usually grown from imported corms, however we have found that seed grown anemones will flower first season, though they take a little longer to hit their robust flowering stride than a corm. The earlier in autumn they hit the ground the better their first year flowers will be, so we have started these as early as germination allows, and even better, these plants will form a corm for you by the end of the season that you can save for next year, or leave in the ground to perennialise. No faffing around with presprouting or rotting corms - these are healthy plants ready for the ground.

Mistral Panda (also known as BCN/ Bianco Nero) is a huge flowered white/blush with dusky black centre. It often has the sofest pink tinge on the petal outers. This mix does throw  the odd fully red bloom so if you're saving your corms for next year and don't want a red that may pop up you can rogue it out. We've found though the red one is often the biggest flower in the patch and leave them just for that!

NOTES ON GROWING

Height: 30cm

Spacing: 20cm

Harvest: Anemones can tell you how old their bloom is by the distance between the petals and the frilly green collar. You can harvest them as soon as the petals have unfurled, or when there is about 1cm between the collar and flower for longest vase life.

Vase life: 10 days when harvested at the right time

All our seedlings are grown in a custom cut flower mix which contains Trichoderma to assist in healthy root development and resistance to root pathogens. To give your seedlings the best start in your garden we recommend soaking them in a weak seaweed feed (or one of our "Seedling Shots") before planting.

We are proud to be partnering with Sustaina Grow to package our seedlings in a wool wrap that maintains moisture and protects the seedlings in transit. On arrival, take your plants out of the box and give them a good drink of water - you can leave them wrapped in the wool to do this! When you're ready to plant or pot on you can unwrap the seedlings, but they will happily spend a couple of days in their wool blanket before planting.

This wool liner makes a wonderful mulch mat that can be used with your seedlings or around any plant in your garden. Everything apart from labels (which we hope you'll use in the garden and time and time again) and stickers are compostable, in an effort to keep our shipping sustainable for the environment.
