Cut Flower Aurora Zinnia Seedlings
Zinnia Elegans
Cut flower Aurora Zinnia seedlings, grown by Gray Floral NZ and shipping NZ wide.
We are very excited to introduce the Aurora Zinnia from Johnny's Seed in the USA! As far as we can tell we are the only grower who has imported this seed to NZ, and we can't wait to see this new variety in bloom. Johnny's are a longstanding seed breeder in the States and the Aurora is one for the brights lovers!!
We do not often use 'supplier' photos however the timing of getting the seed in means we have not had a chance to grow Aurora into flower ourselves yet, but we have kept a close eye on the experiences of the Northern Hemisphere flower farms who have - and she looks very true to form. The photos pictured are Johnny's. You can read more about Aurora here.
"Two-tone blooms in a vintage palette.
In 2019, Johnny's Breeding Team started selecting Aurora for its unique two-tone flowers with contrasting centers. Early flowering plants produce 4–6" wide dahlia-shaped double blooms. Hues of apricot, butter yellow, coral, gold, orange, and pink give this special mix a nuanced vintage look that sets it apart. May yield a small percentage of semidouble or single blooms and approximately 5% cactus-flowered blooms."
Please note Zinnia are frost tender - depending on where in the country you are, you may need to provide frost protection if your region experiences late frosts.

Height: 60cm+
Spacing: 25cm
Pinching: Zinnia will branch and form sturdier plants better when pinched, we have pre pinched these plants for you so they are ready to go!
Harvest: Zinnia do not open much more in the vase, so you want to harvest when they are fully open, but before the bees have had a chance to pollinate them. The 'wiggle test' is great for testing if a flower is ready to pick - hold the stem about 15cm down from the bloom and give it a wiggle. If the flower stays steady on the stem, the flower is ripe, if it flops from side to side give it a few more days!
To fully enjoy the incredible colours and layers of these zinnias, leave them on the plant until the flower has fully developed, but before the petals start to brown. Picking too early will stop you from experiencing their full bloom!
Vase life: 5-7 days
All our seedlings are grown in a custom cut flower mix which contains Trichoderma to assist in healthy root development and resistance to root pathogens. To give your seedlings the best start in your garden we recommend soaking them in a weak seaweed feed (or one of our "Seedling Shots") before planting.
We are proud to be partnering with Sustaina Grow to package our seedlings in a wool wrap that maintains moisture and protects the seedlings in transit. On arrival, take your plants out of the box and give them a good drink of water - you can leave them wrapped in the wool to do this! When you're ready to plant or pot on you can unwrap the seedlings, but they will happily spend a couple of days in their wool blanket before planting.
This wool liner makes a wonderful mulch mat that can be used with your seedlings or around any plant in your garden. Everything apart from labels (which we hope you'll use in the garden and time and time again) and stickers are compostable, in an effort to keep our shipping sustainable for the environment.
