Cut Flower GF x 2nd Gen Floret Zinnia Seedlings
Zinnia Elegans
Cut flower Zinnia seedlings, grown by Gray Floral NZ and shipping NZ wide.
Like many flower lovers, we have long been inspired by Erin and the Floret team, along with Dawn Creek and the beautiful flowers they grow. Last season we were privileged to grow out their varieties, and see their amazing breeding work come to life.
We have made our own selections from these plants, and isolated and harvested seed which we are now delighted to share with you as Gray Floral x 2nd Generation Floret & Dawn Creek Varieties.
We acknowledge the breeding work that has gone before us and have labelled our selections with reference to the original breeding, and then added our field name to identify them.
As these varieties are a work in progress there are likely to be the odd off-type in the mix - however our trials have shown even the off types are lovely pastel shades, so we hope that if you do have an unexpected surprise, it is a beautiful one.
What we have seen from our own harvested seed is plants that are resilient and more accustomed to our climate, and have thrived even under stress - we hope that they will perform beautifully in your garden.
Please note Zinnia are frost tender - depending on where in the country you are, you may need to provide frost protection if your region experiences late frosts.

Height: 60cm+
Spacing: 25cm
Pinching: Zinnia will branch and form sturdier plants better when pinched, we have pre pinched these plants for you so they are ready to go!
Harvest: Zinnia do not open much more in the vase, so you want to harvest when they are fully open, but before the bees have had a chance to pollinate them. The 'wiggle test' is great for testing if a flower is ready to pick - hold the stem about 15cm down from the bloom and give it a wiggle. If the flower stays steady on the stem, the flower is ripe, if it flops from side to side give it a few more days!
To fully enjoy the incredible colours and layers of these zinnias, leave them on the plant until the flower has fully developed, but before the petals start to brown. Picking too early will stop you from experiencing their full bloom!
Vase life: 5-7 days
All our seedlings are grown in a custom cut flower mix which contains Trichoderma to assist in healthy root development and resistance to root pathogens. To give your seedlings the best start in your garden we recommend soaking them in a weak seaweed feed (or one of our "Seedling Shots") before planting.
We are proud to be partnering with Sustaina Grow to package our seedlings in a wool wrap that maintains moisture and protects the seedlings in transit. On arrival, take your plants out of the box and give them a good drink of water - you can leave them wrapped in the wool to do this! When you're ready to plant or pot on you can unwrap the seedlings, but they will happily spend a couple of days in their wool blanket before planting.
This wool liner makes a wonderful mulch mat that can be used with your seedlings or around any plant in your garden. Everything apart from labels (which we hope you'll use in the garden and time and time again) and stickers are compostable, in an effort to keep our shipping sustainable for the environment.
